Desperation by Peter Abresch

Desperation

When my need is desperate,

When a child is ill,

when my world

is about to implode,

I call in all the chits

from anyone I’ve prayed for,

on my side and Yours,

to plead with You on my behalf.

And in my anxiety I look

for ways to bargain,

If You give me this,

I will give You that.

How ludicrous, Lord, how pitiful

to offer what You already own,

but if You have patience

with my fears,

I will try to remember

the only thing I need

is what I already possess,

Your love.

And that’s all I have

to offer in return.

Sometimes we need to cry out in raw emotion, hoping for a turn of events beyond our control. This is fervent prayer which helps us carry on.
